Water Heater Fire
January 29th - On January 29th 2058 hours, Battalion 2 was dispatched to 2702 Shetland Way for a report of a fire in the basement. Engine 923 with Lieutenant Steve Daneker in charge was advised that the resident of 2702 Shetland Way was reporting that the water heater in the basement was on fire. Upon arrival of Engine 923, Lieutenant Daneker took Shetland Way command and sent his crew into the basement to investigate. Interior crews reported that the water heater was in a secured closet and was on fire. The engine crew forced entry into the closet and contained the fire. Tower ladder 926 had arrived and it's crew was ordered to secure the natural gas feed to the building and to start ventilation. Additional personnel were detailed to knock on each apartment door in the 2700 building and advise the residents of the gas situation. Once the gas was secured the fire was extinguished. Deptford Fire Department Fire Marshal and Public Service Gas Company were summoned to the scene. The damage was confined to the closet surrounding the water heater.

Deer Hit
January 25th - Battalion 2 was dispatched to Deptford Avenue in the area of the Deptford Skating Center for a report of a motor vehicle crash. Engine 921, with Captain Ron Taylor Jr in command, arrived and found a single vehicle crash with the car striking a deer. The deer went through the windshield and landed inside the vehicle. The crew of Engine 921 stabilized the vehicle and assisted EMS with treatment and removal of the driver. The crew of engine 923 assisted with securing the scene. The MVC is under investigation by Deptford PD.

Early Morning Turnpike MVC
January 21st - On Janaury 21, at 0740 hours Battalion 2 along with the Westville and Woolwich Fire Companies were dispatched to the New Jersey Turnpike Mile Marker 17.3 southbound for a report of a motor vehicle crash with entrapment. Battalion Chief Rich Thomas arrived at the 18.5 southbound mile marker finding a two vehicle motor vehicle crash with one vehicle, a ford F-150 Quad Cab heavily damaged from an appearant rollover. Battalion Chief Thomas checked with the New Jersey State Police confirming this was the only crash on the highway and advised the communication center of such.

Battalion Chief Thomas found that the F-150 pick up had an occupant in the rear seat that was semi-conscious and that extrication would be needed. Engine 921's crew was ordered to park before the crash and to secure the vehicle with step cribbing, secure the fluid hazards and de-engergize the vehicle. Rescue 738 was ordered to park past the crash scene and to start the extrication. Rescue 2518, by the orders of 25101, was to stage at the 15.5 mile marker. Extrication was completed and the patient taken to a local hospital. Engine 921 crew remained on location until the vehicle was removed from the roadway.

Dwelling @ Inverness
January 17th - On January 17, 2007 @ 1838 hours, Battalion 2 was dispatched to 5202 Shetland Way for a report of a dwelling fire. Upon arrival of Battalion Chief Rich Thomas, he found a fire in a fireplace that was just lit by the homeowner and that the apartment was filling up with smoke. Engine 923 led by Captain Anthony Steigerwald was ordered to take his crew inside to investigate. The crew of Engine 923 put out the fire with a water can and checked the area with a thermal imaging camera. The crew of arriving Engine 922 was ordered to bring up their positive pressure fan and start ventilation. Arriving Tower Ladder 926 was ordered to ladder the building and check to see if the chimney was blocked. There was no extention of fire, the smoke was ventilated and the chimney found to be in working order.

Battalion 2 Starts off a Busy New Year
January 1st, 2007 - It was a busy morning for Battalion 2 beginning around 1am. Engine 9-2 was dispatched to the intersection of Florence Ave and Old Broadway for a wire hanging in the road way. Upon arriving on location, Engine 923 Captain Anthony Steigerwald determined that the wire was a cable wire. The line was removed from the roadway and the company went available. Later in the evening around 0430hrs, Engine 9-2 was dispatched to the front of 417 Deptford Ave to assist police.


Upon the arrival of Engine 921 and Command 920, 921 went into service with the light tower providing lighting for police and fire crews. A Woodbury Patrol Car had lost control, side-swiping an electric pole and careening into the house. The police officer suffered minor injuries, however the vehicle was totaled. The crew from 922 was requested to enter the interior of the dwelling to investigate a strange smell. As nothing was in evidence, the patrol car was towed from the scene and crews were released.


Around 1900hrs, Engine 9-2, Squad 7-3, Camden County BLS 318, and Squad 75 were dispatched to the 25.5 Northbound Mile Marker of the NJ Turnpike for a vehicle fire. Upon arrival of 921, 9203 (Steigerwald) reported that there was a 4 door sedan with engine compartment involved. The fire was extinguished and crews went available. As it stands right now Battalion 2 has 4 calls for the year, the 4th being an alarm system at the Residence Inn on Rt 41 on January 3rd.
